چکیده

We calculate the magnification light curves due to stellar microlensing of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows. A GRB source appears on the sky as a thin ring which expands faster than the speed of light and is maximally magnified as it crosses the lens caustics. While a single star lens produces a single peak in the magnification light curve, binary star lenses may produce multiple peaks. The shape of the magnification light curve provides invaluable information on the surface brightness distribution of the afterglow photosphere on sub microarcsecond scales. We find that all afterglows are likely to show variability at the level of a few percent about a year following the explosion, due to stars which are separated by tens of Einstein radii from their line-of-sight. Microlensing of Gamma Ray Bursts by Stars and MACHOs

The microlensing interpretation of the optical afterglow of GRB 000301C seems naively surprising, since a simple estimate of the stellar microlensing rate gives less than one in four hundred for a flat ΩΛ = 0.7 cosmology, whereas one event was seen in about thirty afterglows. Considering baryonic MACHOs making up half of the baryons in the universe, the microlensing probability per burst can be...

Resolving the Image of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows with Gravitational Microlensing

Microlensing of a gamma-ray burst afterglow by an intervening star can be used to infer the radial structure of the afterglow image. Near the peak of the microlensing event, the outer edge of the image is more highly magnified than its central region, whereas the situation is reversed at later times due to the rapid radial expansion of the image on the sky. Thus, the microlensed afterglow light...

Cosmological Microlensing Statistics: Variability rates for Quasars and GRB Afterglows, and implications for macrolensing magnification bias and flux ratios

The fraction of quasar’s and gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows that vary due to microlensing by the stellar populations of intervening elliptical/S0 galaxies is computed by combining the joint distribution of effective microlensing convergence (κ) and shear (γ) with microlensing magnification patterns. Microlensing is common in multiply imaged sources. We find that 1 in 3 multiply imaged quasars...

Microlensing of γ-Ray Burst Afterglows

The afterglow of a cosmological Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) should appear on the sky as a narrow emission ring of radius ∼ 3× 10 cm (t/day)5/8 which expands faster than light. After a day, the ring radius is comparable to the Einstein radius of a solar mass lens at a cosmological distance. Thus, microlensing by an intervening star can modify significantly the lightcurve and polarization signal from a...

There is strong evidence for the existence of black holes(BHs) in some X-ray binaries and most galatic nuclei, based on different measuremental approaches, but black holes aren’t finally identified for the lack of very firm observational evidence up to now. Because the direct evidence for BHs should come from determination of strong gravitational redshift, we hope an object can fall into the re...
